The Smart Integration of Genetics with Sciences of the Past in Croatia: Minding and Mending the Gap (“MendTheGap”) will host multiple workshops open to a select number of Ph.D. students regarding Archaeobotany & Integration of Genetics with Archaeobotany.

The workshops will take place on June 12 and 13, 2017, at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology.

Doctoral students studying biology and agriculture, or those who attended the 2016 Archaeobotany Workshop and Vela Luka summer school are invited to apply. A maximum of 10 applicants will be chosen on a first-come-first-served basis along with qualifications and experience in mind. While no special skills are required, students should exemplify a strong interest and motivation toward archaebotany and genetics.

Students who successfully complete both workshops will be awarded a participation certificate.

Deadline to apply: May 29, 2017

Why should you attend?

Archaeobotany Workshop:

This informational workshop serves as an extension of the 2016 Archaeobotany Workshop, and will discuss identification of carpological plant remains with theoretical and practical knowledge about wood (charcoal) anatomy and its microscopic identification.

Wood identification is a critical aspect of archaeobotany research because it allows researchers an insight into the various uses of wood species for the production of dwellings, boats, furniture and others during ancient times. The existence of certain types of wood at specific archaeological sites can also help researchers make better conclusions about paleoenvironments and migrations of ancient human populations.

Integration of Genetics with Archaeobotany Workshop:

Participants will receive fundamental understanding of how genetic tools are used in biodiversity studies. The day emphasizes hands-on approach to molecular diversity studies by combining educational lectures with lab experiences.

Lab exercises will cover DNA isolation from fresh, herbarium and archaeological specimens, microsatellite analysis, amplification and sequencing of chloroplast DNA regions, capillary gel electrophoresis and raw data management. Subsequent lecture topics that are dedicated to molecular data analysis and interpretation will include: measures of genetic diversity, genetic distance, multivariate statistics and the analysis of population structure.
